On Wednesday evening, April 1, 2020, United Local’s chapter of National Honor’s Society honored its new inductees. In the past few months, Mr. Burd’s 8th grade language arts class has completed a number of writing assignments aimed at introducing the students to writing opportunities outside of school. Such assignments included product reviews and blog posts with a subject chosen by the individual students. Click here to read some of their work!
On Saturday, February 29th, United Local's Competition Cheer Team will be traveling to Pickerington High School to compete in the 2020 State Competition. On Saturday, February 29th, the United Community Scholarship Foundation will be hosting their annual All You Can Eat "Egg"-Stravaganza breakfast from 7:00 am to Noon in the high school cafeteria. On Thursday, February 6th, Youth Coalition members and student volunteers created a banner for Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Following the activity, the banner, along with a number of statistics and resources, was displayed on a bulletin board next to the concession stand in the cafeteria. The cast of United's Beauty and the Beast will be hosting a pre-show workshop for elementary school students on March 6th. Students will have the opportunity to meet the leading characters, tour backstage, and learn a simple dance combination to perform at intermission. On Friday, January 24th, Principal's Advisory Council and junior high representatives traveled to Beaver Local to tour their school building. On December 8th, 2019, United Local's elementary, junior high, and high school bands wrapped up their Christmas season with their annual Christmas concert. On December 6th, the high school marching band traveled to Youngstown to participate in the Youngstown Christmas parade. On Friday, November 1st, Spanish Club members and students in Spanish classes kicked off their Day of the Dead studies and celebrations. Junior High students at United take part in a 10-week program called the Anti-virus Character Education Program. Each week, students learn about a different character trait from mentor Tom Coffee. Mr. Coffee sat down with the Talon to talk about the program at United, the success of the program, and the future of the Anti-virus Character education. Election Day is coming up! On Tuesday, November 5th, make sure to go out and vote. Local judges, school board members, and other officials and measures will all be on the ballot. On Friday, October 25th, the junior high and high school bands combined for their annual junior high night. Also on October 25th, the Homecoming Queen and King were crowned. On Monday, October 28th, United Local Students kicked off their annual Clash of Cans food drive. The Clash of Cans is a head to head competition against the Lisbon Blue Devils to see who can bring in the most non-perishable food products. The food drive will end on Friday, November 1st and the Clash of Cans winner will be announced at the United v. Lisbon football game that night. The Pulsera Project has entered its second week! The project, benefiting families communities in Central America, is being managed by the United Local Spanish Club and its adviser Mrs. Brothers.
