The PSAT/NMSQT, a preparatory test for the SAT, will be given at United High School in October each year. Juniors should consider taking the test as it's an excellent preparation for other college admissions tests. This test is also used as the qualifier by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as they use the total of the three scores (critical reading, math, and writing) as an index to identify potential National Merit finalists.
Sophomores are also eligible to take the PSAT, but are not yet eligible for the National Merit Scholarship competition. It is, however, a good opportunity for a sophomore to practice and prepare for testing again the following year.
The cost of the test is $18.00 and this fee should be paid in the guidance office (checks payable to United Local). There are a limited number of tests so students are encouraged to register quickly.
