The freshman Ag class visited Mrs. Spillman’s 3rd grade class to exchange valentines! Students planted sunflower plants in decorated pots. The 3rd graders also made the high schoolers “Moovolous” cards! Fun was had by all. In a couple weeks, the 3rd graders will visit the ag room to check on their germinating sunflowers! This spring, we are going to plant the flowers in the flower beds for all to enjoy🌻

Congratulations to our United Girls Bowling Team for placing 5th overall in their division sectionals tournament yesterday. While only the top 3 teams advance, this was a strong finish to a great season. Leading the way for the Lady Eagles was Makayla Frederick who did make the top three individual scores and she is moving on to the District contest. GO EAGLES!

Students in Agriscience began the germination process of the "leafy greens for you and me" project. Step 1: ensure the pH of the water is the ideal 6-6.5 for growth. Step 2: Soak the growing medium (rockwool stater cubes). These have zero nutrients, they just hold the seed and roots during growth. Step 3: place one seed per cube and cover with vermiculite, an absorbent mineral. Step 4: place in grow cart and wait for plants to sprout. We have planted 5 varieties of lettuce, cherry tomatoes and strawberries!

Students in Mr. Gentry's plant & animal science class are working on making the Hydroponics units more user friendly! We are building carts so they are easier to move. Students put their shop safety skills, angle cutting skills and measurement reading skills to practice while designing, cutting and assembling these cart decks for the hydroponic towers to sit on. They also practiced teamwork, collaboration and communication skills. After adding wheels, they will be much easier to move & store! Stay tuned for the finished product!

Mr. Gentry's intro to Agriculture Education class got to practice first hand what it's like being a FFA officer. We held mock meetings today, where each class member had a chance to pick a office and run opening ceremonies. There were many naturals who should definitely consider joining FFA & trying for a leadership role!

The United Agriscience education department has began receiving some of the hydroponic equipment we purchased made possible by the Bonnie Hopple grant, CASH Coalition and CTE funding. We will have 4 of these 80 pot units that will be apart of a fully functioning, self sustaining Hydroponics lab. We will be growing lettuce for the United Local cafeteria once we are up and running! These units grow plants in a soilless environment and nutrient rich water.
