6th graders in Mrs. Tedeschi’s classes learned about how and why civilizations developed by participating in a 2-day survival simulation where they had to get water, food, and shelter to survive.  Tasks included carrying river water by spoonful to fill a cup on their desk, hunting food slips or farming for 20 food units and then planting corn, and building a model of a shelter with craft sticks and toothpicks. Day 1 - students worked alone and the total survival rate for all classes was 38%.  Day 2 - students worked cooperatively and the total survival rate was 94%. Mission accomplished!
