Day #2 of National FFA Convention was our tour day! We visited Fair Oaks farms, a multi-conglomerate incorporated farming business in north western Indiana. The company milks more than 25,000 cows, runs a farrow to wean operation totaling more than 9,000 swine, farms 19,000 acres and had an enormous agritourism division. Students got to see first hand how Fair Oaks puts animal welfare, bio security and learned what it takes to run a dairy & swine operation of this caliber. We first toured the dairy facility where they have both rotary style parlors and an entirely robotic automated 2,000 head dairy facility. Next we attended the swine unit that is farrow (birth) to weaning (no longer nursing) pig farm. students got to track pigs from birth all the way to breeding. They got to see piglets being born, practice ultrasounding, and see the vaccination protocols.
We rounded out the evening with a fun trip to “Get air trampoline park” where the students tried to cripple Mr. Gentry. Everyone is exhausted but had a great second day at convention 🐮 🐷
